Description

Combining function with women's health education, the UTI in Women Clipboard pairs a sturdy professional A4 clipboard with a detailed double-sided reference chart — everything a women's health clinic, urology office, or gynecology practice needs to support patient education and understanding of urinary tract infections.

The Clipboard

  • Durable A4 plastic clipboard with smooth, reliable clip mechanism
  • Lightweight and portable — ideal for exam rooms, waiting rooms, patient consultations, and home visits
  • Fully removable chart attaches and detaches cleanly without damage

The Chart — Side 1: Anatomy, How UTIs Develop & Risk Factors

The Female Urinary Tract

  • Front view illustration showing how urine travels from kidneys to outside the body
  • Kidneys — filter blood and make urine
  • Ureters — carry urine to bladder
  • Bladder — stores urine
  • Female urethra — only 4cm long, bacteria reach bladder easily — this is why women get UTIs more often
  • Normal urine flow downward — kidneys → ureters → bladder → urethra → outside
  • UTI bacteria travel the opposite direction — upward into the body
  • Key fact: 1 in 2 women will experience a UTI in their lifetime

How a UTI Develops — 3 Steps

  • E. coli bacteria cause 80-85% of all UTIs
  • Step 1 — bacteria enter urethra from bowel area
  • Step 2 — bladder infected = cystitis — burning urination, frequent urge, cloudy or smelly urine
  • Step 3 — if untreated, kidneys infected = pyelonephritis — high fever, back pain, nausea, vomiting, needs antibiotics
  • Warning — pyelonephritis can lead to kidney damage or sepsis — treat early, do not wait

Common Causes and Risk Factors

  • Sexual activity — bacteria pushed toward urethra
  • Menopause — declining estrogen thins tract lining
  • Poor hygiene — wipe front to back not back to front
  • Holding urine — bacteria multiply in stale urine
  • Dehydration — less urine means less flushing of bacteria
  • Catheters — introduces bacteria directly to bladder
  • Diabetes — high blood sugar feeds bacteria and weakens immunity
  • Kidney stones — block urine flow and create environment for bacterial growth

The Chart — Side 2: Symptoms, Treatment & Prevention

Symptoms — What to Watch For

  • Burning urination — most classic symptom
  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Pelvic pressure or pain — lower belly
  • Cloudy or dark urine — murky instead of clear
  • Strong or foul smell — urine has unusual odor
  • Blood in urine — pink, red, or cola colored, see a doctor immediately
  • Fever and chills — infection has reached kidneys, seek care urgently
  • Confusion or fatigue — in adults 65+, may be only symptom
  • Warning — fever, back pain, or blood in urine — seek medical care urgently

Treatment — What Happens When You Have a UTI

  • Step 1 — symptoms appear — burning, urgency, cloudy urine, pelvic pain — do not ignore
  • Step 2 — see your doctor — urinalysis detects infection, culture identifies bacteria type
  • Step 3 — antibiotics — 3-5 days for most women, complete fully even if better early
  • Recovery — symptoms improve within 1-3 days, finish full course
  • Warning — if fever or back pain develop seek urgent care immediately
  • Key reminders — never self-treat with old antibiotics, always complete the full course, drink plenty of water, recurrent UTIs — ask about a prevention plan

Prevention — 10 Ways to Reduce Your Risk

  • Drink water — 8-10 glasses daily flushes bacteria out
  • Front to back — always wipe front to back after toilet
  • After intimacy — urinate soon after intercourse to flush bacteria
  • Don't hold it — bacteria multiply in held urine, go when you need to
  • No harsh sprays — no douches or harsh soaps, disrupts protection
  • Cotton underwear — breathes and reduces moisture and bacteria
  • Cranberry — may help some women, evidence is mixed, ask your doctor
  • Stay hydrated — especially in hot weather or when exercising
  • See your doctor — ask about vaginal estrogen if post-menopausal
  • Shower not bath — bath water can introduce bacteria, shower instead

Fast Facts

  • 1 in 2 women will have a UTI in their lifetime
  • #2 most common infection in the body after respiratory
  • UTIs are significantly more common in women — anatomy is the key reason
  • 80-85% caused by E. coli bacteria from bowel area
  • Untreated UTIs can cause serious or permanent kidney damage
  • Post-menopausal women are significantly more vulnerable due to falling estrogen levels

The fully removable chart means you can hand it to a patient, display it on a wall, or use it independently — and replace it whenever you need a fresh copy.
